Information for events and activities happening in the Victoria community.
The past three years have been full of laughter, learning, and love. We have been very lucky to meet inspiring people from all backgrounds, and we strongly believe that we have had the best students. Our students are the ideal learner: curious, open, kind, and passionate. It has been a joy helping all of you, and we are so proud of everything that you have become.
Sadly, due to reasons beyond our control, we must put the school up for sale. As a small local business, we have worked hard for three years and we hope that we will be able to continue our record of excellence in education with a new buyer. However, if we are not able to sell the school, our last day of business will be June 28, 2019.
Your support has lifted us higher than we could have gone alone, and no matter what happens, our connection to you remains. Thank you for being part of this incredible adventure.
We want to let you know that classes will still be fun, useful, and full of interesting information until the end of June.
We would love to reconnect with our old students and make new friends. From now until the end of June, pay what you want for our classes. You choose how much you want to pay for classes.
Everyone at REV
Although our future is uncertain, we believe that our school philosophy is the educational model of the future. In these past few years, we have helped to spark positive changes in the ESL industry in Victoria. We ask that you continue to carry on our passion. Push for change. Work hard to give students the education that they deserve. It is our responsibility not just as a global community, but as role models for the generations to come. We must help each other become the best that we can be.
With the recent beautiful weather in Victoria, everyone is going outside. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet new people and practice your English!
But what do you talk about? As an ESL student, one of the first questions you will likely be asked is “Where are you from?” It’s a easy way to start a conversation, but what do you say after?
There are many different options for continuing this conversation. You could ask:
- Have you ever been to [my country]?
- Have you done a lot of traveling?
- Are you from the island? (This question is a common one. It means “Were you born on Vancouver Island?”)
- Have you been to [this event] before?
Now it’s time to say good-bye. How do you leave the conversation? You could try one or more of these phrases:
- It was nice talking to you.
- Thanks for the chat.
- I wish we could talk more, but I’ve got to go.
- I’ll hopefully see you around. (Meaning: “I hope to see you again.”)
Not sure what to do this summer? There are a lot of festivals, events, and activities that you can attend. Check out the following links for events around town:
We’re super excited to announce that we’ve won the Best Speaking School of Victoria again this year! This is the second year in a row that we have received this award. Thank you, Canada Study!
Thank you so much to all of our students, business partners, friends, and family. We are so proud of everyone that we work with. We made this school for you, and we will continue to work hard to give everyone the help that they deserve.
Come and talk to us anytime!
Have you noticed REV’s newest student? Her name is Q. She walks around the school, greeting students and demanding scratches. It’s impossible to ignore her! We love having a dog at the school.
Actually, there is another reason to have her here – we are studying her behaviour in preparation for our newest adventure. On April 1, 2020, REV will open REV Puppy – Real Dogs, Real Barking! That’s right – we are going to teach people and dogs! You can sign your dog up for obedience classes while you are learning English.(more…)
Last week, we had Mary Chan from The Homestay Kitchen Podcast come by for an interview with Greg. They talked about how homestay families can make things better and easier for students and about being open to students’ culture.
Have you stayed with a homestay family before? Sometimes it can be hard to find a good homestay at a reasonable price. However, if you’re able to find a family that fits, living with a Canadian family can be a very rewarding experience. Many students and homestay families become long-lasting friends. I personally know many students and homestays who ended up switching places after because the homestay family went to visit the student in their home country!
But how do you know who’s a good homestay and who’s not?(more…)
Have you seen this meme on your Facebook or other social media?
Or this cartoon from Raeside?
Why do Victorians find them so funny?(more…)
Brrrr…. Do you feel cold? I do! Victoria is currently having a cold snap. This means a sudden drop in temperature. The weather forecast says that it is going to be clear and cold until Friday. After that, we will return to our usual cloudy and rainy winter weather. https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-85_metric_e.html
Have you noticed that the school is a little chilly? How about other public buildings? There is a reason for that. Many buildings in Victoria are heated using natural gas. In October, there was an explosion in a natural gas pipeline in BC. The pipeline is fixed now, but the company can’t provide as much gas as usual. As a result, they have asked businesses and homes in BC to turn down their thermostats (reduce the temperature inside) to save gas. You can read more about this story here: https://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/natural-gas-shortage-could-last-all-winter-households-urged-to-conserve-1.23497101

Today is the day that we turn 2.
For most people, 2 is not a big number. “Why are you so excited about a second anniversary?” you might ask. “You’ve only been open for two years!”
But for us, it doesn’t feel like it’s been only two years. It’s been two years of learning new skills, bridging local and global communities, and constantly reaching for our best. We’ve laughed and made great friends and a wonderful family. When we’ve made mistakes, we’ve always gotten back up stronger than before. It’s been a lifetime of discovery, and we’re so honoured that you helped us get this far.
From all of us at REV, and from the best, warmest, and proudest part of our hearts, thank you so much. We’re looking forward to spending year 3 with you!
If you want to come and celebrate with us, we’ll be having a casual picnic at Beacon Hill Park on July 5, from 3:30 – 6 PM. Everybody is welcome! If you’d like, you can bring some snacks or drinks to share.
Hope to see you there!
The sky is blue, the clouds are white, and the sun is golden… summer’s coming! What are your plans?
On Sunday June 17, you can go downtown to enjoy Victoria’s 3rd annual Car-Free Day. On this day, Douglas Street is transformed into a huge pedestrian area (walkers only – no cars) with food stands, craft booths, music, and activities. You can enjoy walking around, or you can volunteer. (PS – It’s also Father’s Day in Canada, so don’t forget to call your Dad!).
